Festivals and Seasons
in the Lutheran Church Calendar
The Annunciation – 25 March, the day when the virgin Mary was told by the angel Gabriel that she would give birth to Jesus Christ (Luke 1:26-38).
Advent – The 4-week period preceding Christmas day, which is a season of preparation and waiting for the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ.
Christmas – The day the birth of Jesus Christ is celebrated (Luke 2:1-7).
Epiphany – 6 January, the day when the Magi (wise men) followed the star to visit Jesus, worshiping Him and presenting Him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh (Matt. 2:1-12).
Transfiguration – In the presence of the apostles, Peter, James, and John, Jesus’ appearance was changed into a glorified form to emphasize His spiritual nature and purpose (Matt. 17:1-13 and Luke 9:28-36).
Lent – The 40-day period preceding Easter that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on the Saturday before Easter Sunday.
Ash Wednesday – The name given to the first day of Lent.
Palm Sunday – The first day of Holy Week that commemorates Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem in preparation for His death (John 12:12-13).
Holy Week – The week before Easter Sunday.
Maundy Thursday – The Thursday during Holy Week that commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus and the apostles (Luke 22:7-23).
Good Friday – The Friday during Holy Week that commemorates the day Jesus was crucified and died (Matt. 2:32-56, Luke 23:26-49, and John 19:17-42).
Easter Sunday – The Sunday following Holy Week, the third day after Jesus’ crucifixion and burial, that commemorates Jesus’ resurrection from death (Matt. 28:1-10, Mark 16:1-8, Luke 24:1-12, and John 20:1-18).
Ascension of Jesus – 40 days after His resurrection on Easter Sunday, while the apostles watched, Jesus was taken up in a cloud into Heaven (Mark 16:19, Luke 24:24-31, John 3:13, and Acts 1:9-11).
Pentecost – The seventh Sunday after Easter Sunday that commemorates the baptism of the apostles with the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:1-13).
Reformation– 31 October, which commemorates the day Martin Luther initiated the Protestant movement in 1517 by elucidating Scriptural inaccuracies in Catholic Church teachings.
